“Light in the Darkness”

“God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me. Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.” (Job 23:15-17 NIV)

I think one of the most profound statements about prayer, especially prayer during our painful and dark seasons of life, is spoken by Job at the very end of Chapter 23. Now here’s how Job starts this out. He says that he is terrified of God‘s presence. He is in dread of him. God made his heart faint. The Almighty has terrified me, Job says.

Yes … I guarantee you that when I’m in those situations, my tendency is to run away from God, to hide from Him. To be silent. Not Job. And Job, therefore, becomes our professor of prayer today and teaches us. Because he goes on to say, “Yet I will not be silent” or “Yet I am not silenced because of the darkness.”

Job refused to remain silent toward God even when he’s been enveloped by this darkness and pain. Instead, he continued to cry out to God, who’s in the darkness.

And in that way Job becomes a profound teacher for us, because when we’re in the darkness, what God wants us to do is cry out to Him. God‘s in that darkness with us. Maybe we can’t see Him. Maybe we even think that He is against us. He’s not. God is for us. And He is eager and willing for us to pray … to reach out to Him … and He will show us mercy. He will sustain us—even in that darkness—and eventually bring us to the light of hope again. Do not despair. Know that the Lord is near. He is there … even when you can’t see Him.

“I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Gives Me Strength.” - Philippians 4:13

The Bible tells us that we "all have sinned and fallen short of the God's glory" (Romans 3:23). The good news is: that's not the end of the story. God's only son, Jesus, was sent to our world to die for our sins (Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 2:24). All we have to do is believe in Him and we will have eternal life (John 3:16). If you want to know more about about Jesus and how He can change your life, let us know how we can encourage and pray for you.
